Plans for £250,000 rail station upgrade welcomed
ROMSEY'S Conservative parliamentary candidate has given her backing to plans to upgrade access and parking facilities at the town's railway station.
Mrs Caroline Nokes said access for the disabled and the elderly was badly needed at the station.
First Great Western and the borough and county council is putting in a bid for £250,000 government funding to improve access by installing a ramp and new access in on the Southampton-bound platform.
Currently, passengers have to use an underpass beneath the tracks to reach Platform 1 and there is also a shortage of car parking spaces. The plan is to provide more within the grounds of the former stationmaster's house, which is currently earmarked for conversion into a youth hostel.
"I do hope this bid is successful as improved access to the station is sorely need. We want to encourage more people to use the train and Romsey is fortunate to have a good connection, but access to the platforms is important and at present it is very difficult for many people and the car parking is clearly less than adequate. I am delighted that the borough council and county council are working in partnership with First Great Western. Now we have to see if the Government will support us in Romsey," said Mrs Nokes, who represents Romsey Extra ward on the borough council.
