Dismay at closure of post office

QUESTIONS were being asked this week about the shock closure of Romsey's Great Woodley Post Office following the suspension of its sub-postmaster.

Explanations were being asked for both by local residents and councillors.

But when Post Office management were contacted by the Romsey Advertiser this week, a spokesperson said in a statement: "Great Woodley branch closed on Tuesday, August 5 following a routine audit.

"As a precaution, the sub-postmaster has been suspended pending further enquiries.

"We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by this temporary lapse in service."

Great Woodley Post Office, in Warren Gardens, was not one of the post offices which came under threat in last year's "review", which meant several closures in the Romsey area.

It was, in fact, included in the list of offices which would remain in the network.

And the spokesperson said it was hoped that a way could be found of providing renewed services for the Woodley area.

Concerns were ex-pressed after Woodley residents had contacted their local Test Valley Borough councillors for the Cupernham Ward, Romsey Mayor, Karen Dunleavy and former Mayor, Dorothy Baverstock.

They said in a joint statement: "There has been a post office on the Great Woodley Estate for as long as we can remember and with Braishfield no longer having a post office, this one has been used by a large number of people on the north-eastern side of the town.

"We sincerely hope the Post Office will renew the service for the residents of the area as soon as possible."

And County Councillor Mark Cooper quickly asked the Post Office for a "resolution to this untimely closure.

He wrote: "The above-mentioned branch has closed, much to the distress of its many users, many of whom find the long trek into the town to the main post office difficult and inconvenient.

"At no time was this particular office on any closure consultation list and was therefore assumed to be in good health.

"My local councillor colleagues have spoken to the shop owner who acted as the postmaster, but I still have no clear picture as to why the post office counter has suddenly closed."

They can ask all the questions they like until they are blue in the face. Post Office closures are part of an EU Directive. The New World Order doesn't like small shops and businesses. It is all part of the abolition of Britain. get used to it!

Reading between the lines its obvious why it is closed - temporarily, while further inquiries are made regarding the sub-postmasters working practices.

Well about there was some sort of explanation if you can call it that. I for one have found this really inconvient god only knows how the poor elderly people have coped over the last couple of months especially if those that live that end of Romsey. If it is due to the Post Master being suspended why can't a tempoarily one step in. Another reason why i shall go out of Romsey to do either shopping or business. That little PO is a little gem for the local communtity, even if you didn't always get a smile when going there ( i know that seems the norm in PO the people are generally very miserable) but the service is what's needed.I hope it can re-open very soon.

This has been for a long time a Post Office waiting to be closed.Irrespective of any 'audit problems' the sub-postmaster was so lacking in inter-personal skills and oblivious to the needs of his customers, particularly local pensioners, that he deserves to lose the franchise, and give way to someone more amiable, in time for the busy Christmas season of goodwill to all men!
