RAF reunion takes off
ROMSEY'S first reunion of Singapore's RAF Changi veterans has been hailed as a success.
Members of the RAF Changi Association gathered at the town's Royal British Legion Club recently for a get-together and a buffet lunch to rekindle their memories of their time at the British base in Malaysia.
Amongst them was Anne Moore, from East Wellow, who organised the event, and Arthur and Sylvia Rose who live in Romsey.
Anne, who was presented with the Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal for her services at RAF Changi in the 1960s, said: "The reunion was extremely successful and about 50 people turned up. Everybody agreed it was a super venue for it. The Royal British Legion did us proud."
"This was out first reunion in Romsey and we hope it will become an annual event."
Anne said one member came all the way from his winter home in Kuala Lumpur.
Among the local people attending was Trevor Dovey, from Romsey, who was reunited with someone who was in his barrack block in the 1950s.
The association archivist brought along all his albums, books, postcards and other memorabilia connected with RAF Changi, which operated between 1946 and 1971.
Anne, who was an air traffic control assistant with the W RAF at Changi recalled: "I went there when there was only one aircraft flight at night and just a few during the day."
Association chairman Mike James and his wife, Delores, were also present at the reunion and Mrs James sold over £100 worth of memorabilia.
The next meeting of the association, which has more than 1,000 members, will be at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight on Saturday, October 18.
Anyone from the Romsey area who was at RAF Changi and is interested in going along to this and other reunions should contact Anne on 01794 322444.
