Young sailors follow Olympic stars

WHILE Britain's top sailors were making Olympic history in China, two youngsters from the Romsey area were continuing to emerge as outstanding prospects for the future - on some very high seas.
Mountbatten School student Matthew Wallis, 14, and Annabel Vose from Hampshire Collegiate School at Embley Park, also had to overcome some incredibly testing conditions in finishing as the top two in the Volvo Musto Optimist national championships.
Winds were gusting to around 40 miles an hour off Pwhelli, North Wales, when the championships got under way with an overall entry of 447 young sailors for its senior, junior and novice sections.
Matthew, who lives at Wellow, was the eventual winner after going to the front on the first day and winning three of his 12 races.
The same week, out in Beijing, many Olympic races were being postponed due to the lack of wind but the young Optimist sailors faced the opposite problem with big sea swells and gusts of up to 35 knots.
Annabel Vose, from the Royal Southern Yacht Club, also tackled the tricky weather conditions brilliantly throughout the week and, as well as being second overall - just two points behind Matthew - she picked up the "Best Girl" trophy.
